Who is King James? and why does he have a version of the bible?

in church the preacher had the newer king james version and we had the old regular one. why did he have it re written? or what does that mean? written in the king’s english maybe?

King James of England and Scotland was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots and was crowned king of England after the death of Elizabeth 1 of England. A devout Protestant, he had the bible translated into English for the first time. The ‘newer’ version simply uses more modern terms so that it is more understandable for today’s readers; since 1600′s English was very different from what we day today.
