Do Episcopalians venerate the saints?
Do Episcopalians honor the saints with icons and do they preserve their holy relics? Do they sing songs to them?
YES,
NO,
and MAYBE
(like most things in the Episcopal Church!)
YES- some, (mind you, “SOME”) individuals, parishes, and clergy (including yours truly) believe that”The Communion of Saints” unites us beyond death and that the (Revelation 5:8) “golden bowls of Incense which are the Prayers of the Saints” are prayers for us. So we ask the departed, and especially those of notably holy lives (saints), to pray for us.
And we honor them on the anniversary day of their death each year, and name parishes after them, and have statues and flat ikons of them in our homes and churches. We often prolong our prayer requests to them by lighting candles.
We do not have many very hymns focusing upon their lives the way the Eastern Orthodox do in their liturgy, but we have a few.
That’s the “yes” part.
For the “NO” part-
Some other Episcopalians believe that the only way to defend Christianity and bring the Gospel to others is to be evangelical Christians or fundamentalists. They would say that all the departed Christians are equal and that it is taking prayer-time away from God to venerate or ask the prayers of saints.
“maybe”- Some other Episcopalians are looking for “role models” and so like to know about the lives of saints to be able to learn from them,. They feel a personal connection to some saints, but do not feel that there is any supernatural connection to any or all of the Saints.
BTW-
I notice that when I mention a specific saint,
Roman Catholics ask “Of what is he the Patron Saint?”
Orthodox ask, “When is her feast day?”
Episcopalians ask, “What did he do? When did he live? Did he leave any writings or famous quotations?”
